Bird flu plays havoc!!
Here is a piece of conversation with my mom/dad on messenger yesterday..
Background: My mom is a gujarati jain(a type of hindu who are staunch vegetarians) and my dad is a by-choice vegeterian, both of them strongly believe that being vegeterian is the way to go and i have been lectured upon several scientific theories by them time and again stressing on that fact...and while my siblings make them happy, im the bad sheep in the family who cant stay without my meat..
Soni(Mom/dad talking on the same id) : great- Hey, isnt it about time for your dinner now?
Harit: yeah, pretty much... was just going to get some food in some time..
Soni: ok, i am sure you would be reading abt the bird flu stuff on the news. Its causing havoc in India. There is a chance that the infections have spread on to humans too.
Harit: yeah, have been reading abt it..
soni: good. Now this is from mom and this is an order from me too!!!
soni: CHICKEN !! (in the same way as shown here.. red and bold- like a Stop traffic signal)
- at this time, my mom takes over the keyboard-
Harit:well, but mom, theres no bird flu in Canada.. there havent been any cases of bird flu in poultry too.
soni: India is a big poultry exporter. The disease has spread to other european countries like austria and Turkey too besides the chinese mainland. Also Poultry from here is exported even to canada.. why dont you just be safe and stop eating it? Read this - http://www.ibnlive.com/article.php?id=5591§ion_id=3 (a news link which says that eating chicken may increases the chances of getting infected)
Harit : No mom, eating cooked chicken is safe.... - check this out - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3422839.stm (Link which says eating chicken is safe)
Soni: Read the part in the link i sent you - "The WHO warns that the consumption of raw poultry, eggs, pork may spark an "additional" risk of other dangerous infections"
Harit: Well, i can those infections like salmonella and stuff by eating chcken anytime.. they are not saying that we can get bird flu from eating chicken
Soni: Exactly, you can get those infections by eating meat anytime. That gives you even more reason to stop eating chicken. Why dont you just stop eating chicken? those animals get energy by eating vegetables. Why do you want to go down in the energy line and eat the aniumals who eat vegetables. eat vegetables yourself!!
Harit: Well, mom, i eat vegetables along with the meat too.. i like eating vegetables- its not like im surviving on meat alone..
Soni: Well, i still think you should turn vegetarian. even Mansi and rinkoo( sis and bro) have stopped eating any kind of meat.
Harit: Well...
- Before i can finish typing something and go into presnting my defense-- i get the next message-
Soni: anyways, forget it. Its your Dinner time. you must be hungry. you go ahead and have Dinner. We'll talk some other time.
Harit:yeah am starving..talk to you tomorrow..
Soni: what are you having for dinner?
Harit: Hmm...i have something cooked at home.
Soni: oh thats good- you have started cooking at home.what have you made?
Harit: Errr.. Chicken Pasta..
Hmm.. the rest of the conversation is not suitable to be put up on my blog .. At this point i start realising that i should have maybe just spoken an innocent lie which would have hurt no one while my chicken pasta gets cold waiting for me...
its funny how The older you get, the harder your parents try to keep you little.. and its really true in my case cos im the youngest in the family and they still think im 12 years old.. i try to remind them of the fact im turning 23 next month and have been living on my own since the last 5 years .. but well..some things never change!!
The fight still goes on.. but i still remain a meat lover.. those butter chicken dishes and sushi treats are something which i definitely cannot live without !!.. i realise the 1% danger of being food poisoned by salmonella.. but well.. who cares... pass me the meat, baybeh !!:-)
Also the reason why i dont give my blog address to my folks is because i can put pictures like this up-- (Mom and Dad, in case you happen to find this blog somehow- Im sorry!! I was just being culturally sensitive. In Brighton, It was a tradition for guests to do this to the christmas Turkey !!:-) )
Christmas Adventures in Brighton and some pics from the Arctic Ontario :-)!!

All I can say is...I agree with you on the parents trying to keep us "being little" the older we get...though I'm not in any position to say anything since my accident...but yeah it happens...I remember my mummy feeding me heaps and heaps "so that you get betetr quicker" - now i'm left with some flab to work off...lovely. Also she guzzled me down with loads of milk (which was good coz it helped my tissues re-build itself real quick) - something else I have to work off....
But all in all, they do get more protective as we grow older..i think its the "oh my god my baby is growing and becoming more independent - they dont need me anymore, gotta do something about that!" syndrome which is not true of course coz we'll always need our parents....
My mummy freaked out on the phone the other day, because my lil sis might get a scholarship to washington for a year, and she called me all freaked out because i'm in aussie and just had an accident, my sis might be in USA, and dad's in vietnam on some APEC stuff at the mo...she's freaking out "you're all in different countries how am i supposed to look after all of you".
So. thats why, in my opinion parents freak out and try to "give you advice".
Oh, and stay eating chicken. lots of them. butter chicken, 25 cents wings, chicken pasta, etc. its good, go eat chicken. just make sure there is some sort of identifiable vegetable in there :p
